This course will examine our culture’s fascination with narratives involving the supernatural, the haunted and the macabre. We will explore the variety of ways in which classic and contemporary horror writers manage to haunt their readers, while also delving beneath the surface of what scares us: the powerful metaphors and symbols residing there. More than just good scares, these themes will challenge our thinking about themes like politics, relationships, community, family, and every aspect of our lives. Nightmares will abound as we move through a host of stories and a short novel, while also leaving room for students to read and analyze a novel of their choice.
